Swedish biotech company Omnio has raised an oversubscribed €2.9 million from existing investors and shareholders to advance its plasminogen-based therapy for hard-to-heal chronic wounds toward clinical studies. The financing follows a €4.3 million round completed in spring 2025 and will support manufacturing, toxicology work and preparations for clinical trials.
Based in Umeå, Omnio is developing biological therapies designed to address the underlying mechanisms behind impaired wound healing. The company was founded on research led by Professor Tor Ny, a professor emeritus of medical biochemistry at Umeå University and Omnio’s Head of R&D. CEO Felipe Velasquez brings more than 25 years of experience across the pharmaceutical, biotech and healthcare sectors.
Omnio’s lead programme targets diabetic foot ulcers, a serious complication of diabetes where wounds can become chronic and increase the risk of infection and amputation. Its approach uses recombinant plasminogen, a naturally occurring protein involved in clearing damaged tissue, fighting infection and supporting skin regeneration. The company is developing the therapy to reactivate these biological processes in wounds where normal healing has stalled.
The company has now established its master cell bank and is scaling manufacturing ahead of producing a GMP batch for toxicology studies. These studies are required before clinical trial applications can be submitted. Omnio plans to begin its clinical programme with a Phase I/IIa study evaluating safety and early signs of efficacy in patients with diabetic foot ulcers, with patient studies targeted for 2027.
While diabetic foot ulcers are its initial focus, Omnio sees potential for its plasminogen platform across other hard-to-heal conditions, including venous leg ulcers, burns, tympanic membrane perforations, infections and periodontitis. The company says its broader objective is to develop biological treatments that address the biology of chronic wounds rather than relying solely on medical-device-based approaches.
Omnio plans to open another financing round in the first quarter of 2027 to support clinical development through the first efficacy data. Its operations span Sweden, Spain, Denmark, the UK and India, with research and development centred in Umeå and clinical and quality activities coordinated from Barcelona and Copenhagen.
