iGii Secures €26.5 Million to Commercialise Its Proprietary Carbon Nanomaterial

Stirling-based deeptech company iGii has secured €26.49 million (£22.7 million) in new funding to accelerate the commercialisation and industrial adoption of its proprietary carbon nanomaterial, Gii. The funding combines a €13.65 million (£11.7 million) Series B investment led by the Scottish National Investment Bank, with backing from PXN Ventures and Archangels, alongside €12.84 million (£11 million) from Scottish Enterprise.
Founded in 2016, iGii was co-founded by Dr. Marco Caffio, who serves as Chief Scientific Officer. Caffio, a physical chemist with more than 15 years of academic and industry experience, developed the scientific foundations behind the company’s three-dimensional carbon nanomaterial technology.
Today, the company is led by CEO Jean-Christophe Granier, who joined iGii in 2023 to drive its commercial growth and global expansion. Before joining iGii, Granier was CEO of textile technology company J&D Wilkie.
At the centre of iGii’s technology is Gii, a proprietary three-dimensional porous carbon nanomaterial that is grown rather than mined or compounded. The company has developed a manufacturing process that operates at room temperature and can scale to industrial production volumes. This is designed to provide manufacturers with a more scalable alternative to conventional materials used in demanding applications.
Gii can be integrated into a range of biological, chemical and physical systems. iGii is developing applications including multi-analyte sensing, point-of-care diagnostics, environmental monitoring, microheaters and flexible printed battery electrodes. The company says the same underlying material platform can be adapted across multiple industries, allowing manufacturers to develop products with different performance, cost and sustainability characteristics.
The technology also addresses concerns around supply chains for constrained materials such as gold and platinum. By producing its carbon nanomaterial through a scalable manufacturing process, iGii aims to reduce dependence on materials exposed to supply limitations and geopolitical risks.
iGii already has manufacturing capacity capable of supporting large production runs. The company plans to use the new funding to move further from research and development into commercial execution, expand its manufacturing and product capabilities, and deepen relationships with major global manufacturers.
Over the next 12 to 24 months, iGii will focus on converting existing customer relationships into long-term supply agreements while continuing to develop new applications for Gii. The company also expects its workforce to grow from 55 employees, including 17 PhDs, to nearly 70 by the end of 2026.
The investment marks a significant step in iGii’s effort to turn its advanced carbon material from a scientific breakthrough into a commercially scalable technology platform for next-generation products.
