AI infrastructure company Temporal has raised $550 million in Series E funding at a $12.55 billion valuation, more than doubling its valuation from the $5 billion achieved in its Series D just seven months earlier.
The round was led by Lightspeed, with Wellington Management, Growth Equity at Goldman Sachs Alternatives and Tiger Global also co-leading. T. Rowe Price and SV Angel joined as new investors, while existing backers including Andreessen Horowitz, Sequoia Capital, Index Ventures, GIC, Sapphire Ventures and Amplify also participated.
Built for Software That Cannot Afford to Fail
Founded in 2019 by Samar Abbas, CEO and co-founder, and Maxim Fateev, CTO and co-founder, Temporal grew out of the founders' work on distributed systems at AWS, Microsoft and Uber. They previously helped create Amazon Simple Workflow Service, Microsoft's Durable Task Framework and Uber's Cadence workflow engine.
Today, Temporal provides an open-source Durable Execution platform that allows developers to build applications capable of continuing their work even when services crash, networks fail or external systems become unavailable.
Why AI Agents Need Durable Execution
As AI agents move beyond simple chat interactions and begin handling complex, multi-step tasks, reliability becomes increasingly important. An agent may need to call multiple APIs, wait for approvals, interact with databases and continue operating for hours or days.
Temporal's platform preserves application state and automatically handles retries, failures and recovery. This means a workflow can pause during an outage or approval process and resume from where it stopped instead of forcing developers to rebuild the recovery logic themselves.
The company says AI-native businesses executed 1.86 trillion actions on Temporal Cloud over the past year, while its customer base has grown beyond 4,300 paying organizations. Its annualized revenue run rate has also surpassed $250 million, growing more than 200% year over year.
Powering the Next Wave of AI Applications
Temporal is already used by companies including OpenAI, NVIDIA, Netflix, Snap and JPMorgan Chase. The company says its platform processed more than 1.9 trillion actions in August alone, highlighting the growing demand for reliable orchestration infrastructure.
With the new funding, Temporal plans to expand its global operations, accelerate product and platform development, and support enterprises moving AI agents from experimental projects into production.
As AI systems become more autonomous and handle increasingly critical workflows, Temporal is betting that reliable execution—not just better models—will become a fundamental layer of the AI stack.
